The future of electronic devices is being absolute wireless. There has been a general shift of preference from wired devices to non-weird ones. The way we enjoy media, surf the web, play our games, get our work done everything has shifted to the likes of tabs, mobile displays, cell phones, smart watches, etc. The engineers are now trying to come up wireless power transmission technology.
The wireless charging pads are so passé. The WiFi charging is hot topic for the future. Nuclear & Quantum engineering professor at KAIST Mr. Chun T. Rim and his team demonstrated a way to wirelessly power devices over a greater distance than previously thought possible. The Dipole Coil Resonant System (DCRS) is the key factor for increment in range up to 5 meters between the transmitter and receiver coils. The introduction of Coupled Magnetic Resonance System(CMRS) in 2007 by MIT has paved the way for further |
research in wireless charging technology. The CMRS uses magnetic field to transmit power over a distance of 2.1m. This innovation sparked an interest amongst tech companies and has been under research ever since.
The CMRS however has technical limitations which prevents it from being commercialized for now. The coils have a very complicated structure which results in lower transfer efficiency. They are also very sensitive to the surroundings like humidity, temperature and human proximity. The DCRS proposed by professor Rim has provided solution to these problems by changing the design of the coil structure. The CMRS used thick and large loop-shaped loop-shaped air coils, but the KAIST uses center wounded compact ferrite core rods. The primary winding takes high frequency AC current and generates a magnetic field, and this induces voltage in the secondary winding cause of linkage magnetic flux. The DCRS is quite smaller than CMRS but scalable if need be. The research team conducted several experiments and achieved very promising results. DCRS is proving to be 20 times stronger than CMRS when it comes to environmental hindrances. It also works at a lower frequency of 100kHz previously not possible with the CMRS. To give you an idea of what it can do, three 40W-fans and a LED TV can be powered from a distance of 5 meter, according to professor RIM. The future is power delivery is going the direction wireless. With the introduction of DCRS, the power transmission over a longer distance previously thought impossible is being done now. SImilarly to the wifi zone we have now , we will have wi-fi power zones at cafes, offices and street that will provide wireless electric power to devices. Truly a wireless future |
